The first of the fires was noticed in Černokostelecká street shortly before midnight by a police patrol together with an inspector from the Prague rescue service. Flames and thick smoke billowed from the former hostel building, which is heavily populated by homeless people.
Five units of professional and volunteer firefighters went to the scene. The intervention took place using breathing techniques and, among other things, the use of two car ladders. Firefighters were assisted by paramedics and police officers at the scene. During the intervention, the Prague firefighters received information about another fire. This time, the flames were supposed to come from the window on the 13th floor of a residential building at the intersection of Mečíková and Jetelová streets. Firefighters dispatched the nearest available units, including railway firefighters, to the scene. The rescuers sent several of their crews to the scene, as well as the large-capacity Fénix special vehicle.
By the time firefighters arrived, flames were shooting from windows on the 13th floor and thick smoke was rising above the house. The firemen, in cooperation with the police, evacuated the tenants of the house. The fire was quickly brought under control. Firefighters found an injured man in the apartment, which was fully engulfed in flames. They handed him over to the rescuers.
Fire and police investigators are investigating what exactly caused both fires.
