The Chinese military began three days of military maneuvers in the vicinity of Taiwan on Saturday, aiming to rehearse a “complete encirclement” of the island claimed by Beijing.
Taiwan’s defense ministry said on Sunday that its air force was on high alert and Taipei was also monitoring China’s missile force.
In the past 24 hours, Taiwan has registered 71 Chinese aircraft and nine ships of the Chinese Navy in the vicinity of the island. According to Taipei, the maneuvers threaten regional stability and security.
Meeting of the President with the head of the US House of Representatives
News agencies are linking the Chinese military exercise to a meeting between Taiwanese President Tsai Jing-wen and Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy this week.
China regards Taiwan as its province and calls on other countries in the world not to deal with Taiwanese officials and not give the appearance of recognizing the island’s independence. Before the meeting between Cai Jing-wen and McCarthy, Beijing threatened unspecified retaliation.
