Suitable planting time is autumn and early spring, container plants can be planted all year round. Bushes are planted in a root ball in good quality soil. Be sure to plan the exact dimensions of the fence, for example according to the string. Dig deep enough pits so that the individual plants have enough space, form furrows for irrigation so that the water does not flow elsewhere. Loosen the compacted soil and add fertilizer.
When cutting bushes it is important to maintain the overall shape and appearance. It is recommended to rejuvenate the bushes upwards, then the lower parts will also have enough sun and will not be stunted.
When you decide not to cut the hedge, be sure to remove damaged and overhanging branches in autumn.
Evergreen shrubs they form a tightly closed hedge all year round and should only be cut in spring.
How to rejuvenate a cut
Trim the overgrown hedge during the dormant season (preferably until the end of March), when the plant does not receive any nutrients and actually sleeps. This is because it is less sensitive to rougher interventions, and the hedge can thus be easily shortened by up to half. However, it must not freeze, so that the cuts do not freeze! Treat large cuts with an antibacterial balm to prevent disease and fungus from entering.
Rejuvenating cutting is done not only because of the height of the fence. Older fences tend to be sparse in the lower part, by cutting you will force them to grow more densely from below, grow over, and create the right screen.
It is important to trim the fence correctly throughout the season, i.e. regularly. You can conjure up the intended shape with hedge trimmers, but you certainly cannot do without garden shears. You have to cut the stronger branches even deeper in the bush. The greatest flourishing of green fences ends around June, so experts recommend trimming the fence at this time as well. It will then last longer in the intended shortening.
Conifers, which grow more slowly than deciduous trees, usually only need to be pruned once a year. Leafy fences 2–3 times a year. Do not cut the flowering bush right away in the spring, let it bloom in peace first.
Advice & tips
- When the plants are still small and you want privacy, build another hedge in front of the growing hedge, perhaps made of mesh or simple wooden slats. When the bushes grow, the temporary fence is removed.
- The hedge can also be illuminated with outdoor lighting. More pronounced lighting is created by external reflectors and spot lights. The space in front of the hedge can also be enlivened with glass LED stones.
- The hedge will have a perfect appearance thanks to quality tools. Cordless hedge trimmers are suitable. The advantage is not only speed, but also accuracy and a straighter appearance of the hedge.
