According to the state agency, Lukashenko said that he had previously discussed the matter with Putin. According to Lukashenko, he agreed that such security guarantees are necessary and need to be formalized.
“In general, it was said at the meeting (with Putin) that in the event of aggression against Belarus, the Russian Federation will defend Belarus as its own territory. This is what we need,” said Lukashenko.
Belarus is Russia’s closest ally, which has been waging war against Ukraine for more than 13 months. Although Minsk did not send its soldiers to fight, Russian troops from its territory led an attack on the north of Ukraine, including an offensive on Kiev.
