The 58-year-old pilot from the Lowveld realized that continuing the flight would be dangerous, as the Cape cobra is highly venomous. It was not clear when she would wake up. He knew he had to land as soon as possible. He was just considering how to tell the four passengers in the twin-engine Beechcraft Baron 58.
“I told them I had a snake under my seat. He’s in the cockpit, so we need to land as quickly as possible. Fortunately, everyone remained calm,” Lowvelder told the local paper.
The flight controller allowed him to land at the nearest airport in Welkom. He landed there in about ten to fifteen minutes. Fortunately, the snake was calm. After landing, the passengers got off first and the pilot was the last.
As he carefully stepped out, he wanted to find out where the snake was. “I stood on the wing of the plane and moved the seat forward to try and look at the snake. It was curled up under my seat. It was quite big,” he said.
Erasmo was praised by South Africa’s Commissioner of Civil Aviation, Poppy Khosa, for “demonstrating great piloting skills which saved the lives of all on board”. Local air day host Lowveld Airshow Brian Emmenis, who arrived at Welkom Airport shortly after the landing, explained why the airman’s feat was so extraordinary – he had to land in exceptionally bad weather with a snake under his seat.

The snake apparently got on board on Sunday in Worcester as two people saw it crawling into the engine. He stayed on the plane even though they had a layover on the way, Erasmus said. “We flew from Worcester and stopped at Bloemfontein International Airport to refuel and grab something to eat. We took off again and were on our way to the airport in Wonderboom.’
When the firemen arrived at Welkom airport, the snake was no longer under the seat. They called in a snake catcher, but he was unable to catch the snake in the structure, so he spread a thick layer of cornmeal around the plane, in which the snake would leave tracks. None appeared. During the inspection, the snake did not appear either in the cabin or near the engines. It was therefore not possible to confirm whether it was a Cape cobra.
A dangerous cobra
This is a medium-sized to more than a meter long poisonous snake from the coral family and lives in the south of Africa and in the mountains. Due to its effective venom, it is considered one of the most dangerous South African snakes, which also contributes to its shyness, which is why it is also found near human habitations. Its venom contains strong neurotoxins, so a person dies from paralysis of the respiratory muscles.
The case shows once again that the B-horror film Snakes on a Plane is not a fantasized fiction without a real basis, and it does not have to be only cases where a snake is smuggled on board by one of the passengers. A similar case happened in 2012 in Australia to a pilot of the same type of aircraft. A python also appeared on the wing of a large airliner on its way from Australia to Papua New Guinea. The structure of the plane offers snakes a number of shelters, and the machines are also warm, which suits them.
