He was reacting to the fact that a regular exercise is to take place in the Czech Republic in May, which will check the readiness of the army for a possible conscription procedure. The state could resort to it if a state of emergency or a state of war were declared.
This year, the exercise will take place at the same time in all regions, and as guests, representatives of self-governments with regional authorities and doctors, who would participate in the draft procedure in the event of a declaration of crisis, were invited to it. “In order to ensure the security and defense capability of the Czech Republic, we have to do something. We have to verify procedures, all security forces do it. It is in the interest of the citizens,” Fiala also said on Wednesday.
He called the exercise a standard procedure. “It has been done repeatedly for many years. It does not mean that we will have to use it sometime in the future,” he says.
At the press conference after the meeting of the State Security Council, he also assured that the security of the Czech Republic is not at risk. “We are sufficiently protected, primarily by membership in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO),” Fiala emphasized.
