Neurosurgery deals with the treatment of nervous diseases, which include diseases of the brain, spine, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. According to Martin Sameš, Czechs most often suffer from degenerative diseases of the spine that appear during aging, with various cutouts and growths on the cervical spine, but also with brain tumors.
Such diseases are nothing new, but what Sameš considers a so-called medical novelty are the multiple occurrences of tumors of the auditory nerve.

“The incidence of auditory nerve tumors has increased significantly. It is actually the fourth most common tumor in the Czech Republic,” says the director. The first symptoms are ringing and buzzing in the ear, which can lead to deterioration or loss of hearing.
“Whoever says that it bothers them should not hesitate and should seek out their ENT doctor,” points out Sameš, who completed an internship abroad in Japan, where he learned to work precisely with this issue.

If the tumor is small, hearing can be preserved. “For huge tumors, it is a very difficult operation, which lasts for example eight hours,” adds the head.
In the podcast, Sameš also drew attention to the frequent injuries to the spine in the summer months, when people jump into shallow water or fall from trees, despite the fact that doctors try to raise awareness every year.
