Angry birds changed beyond recognition. How the Angry Birds phenomenon developed
Games and gaming systems
From mobile phones to movie screens
Angry Birds was a groundbreaking mobile game released in 2009. In it, players use a slingshot to hurl birds onto the playing field and try to hit and neutralize the green pigs, the thieves of their eggs. It became the first mobile game to surpass one billion downloads. Last year, Rovio announced another milestone, namely five billion downloads across its entire catalog of games.
Rovio tried to build on the success of the original game and released several sequels. A movie was also made. It went public at the end of 2017, hoping it would help its plans for further growth. However, it failed to repeat the success of Angry Birds with other games. It thus became susceptible to being taken over by one of the competing companies.
Last year, global consumer spending on mobile games fell by 6.4 percent to $92.2 billion (CZK 1.96 trillion), according to Newzoo BV. Still, games account for roughly half of all game software sales, with the rest of spending being on games for game consoles and PCs. The slowdown that followed a surge in demand during the pandemic has contributed to a number of takeovers in the industry.
