Ribot was mainly involved in John Zorn’s projects, especially the Filmworks series dedicated to quirky arrangements of film tunes or on the Dreamers series records. However, he also appeared in the electric form of Zorn’s group Masada and at the Zorn Festival.
He is best known for his performance in Tom Waits’ group, whose sound he helped change on the albums Rain Dogs, Frankie Wild Years or Mule Variations, and from his collaboration with Robert Plant and Alisson Kraus on the album Raising Sand, which received a Grammy Award.
However, he also accompanied Lauri Anderson on the record Red, recorded with the titan of American industrial and underground Foetus and also accompanied the beat poet Allen Ginsberg. The breadth of his scope is evidenced by the fact that he is also devoted to contemporary serious music, and he even accompanied the singer-songwriter Elvis Costello.
Ribot, however, also devoted himself to jazz for a long time, playing in The Longue Lizards and then accompanying two of its members on a solo tour – saxophonist and actor John Lurie and pianist Evan Lurie – and he was active in the band The Jazz Passengers following The Longue Lizards. However, he also accompanied Norah Jones or Diana Krall.
