The attack took place behind the walls of the prison in Valdice in Jičín, where both were serving their previous sentences. The defendant got there for murder, for which he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. At that time, as a teenager, he stabbed an acquaintance in Karviná during a street fight. It was shortly after he left the educational institution.
Last year, the sentence was increased by another five years, when he was sentenced for injuring a fellow inmate in Karvina prison. During the conflict, he threw a heavy chair at him.
But apparently he hasn’t learned his lesson and continues to resolve disagreements aggressively. As written in the indictment, during the incident in Valdice, he first threw a chair at a 39-year-old fellow prisoner after a previous verbal conflict. When the victim hid behind the bathroom door, Tulej forced the door open and attacked.
“The victim parried the first blow, but during the second, the defendant managed to stab the victim in front of the left ear, and the defendant’s next attack was only prevented by a witness who was present to tear him away from the victim and members of the prison guard entered the cell,” said prosecutor Milan Vacek.

The defendant claimed in court that he was the one who was attacked. He is said to have been attacked by two prisoners, one of whom weighed 100 and the other 130 kilograms.
“I wasn’t the main actor. I only admit to the stabbing, I didn’t want to hurt him,” he said in court during his testimony. It is said that the conflicts occurred because the other prisoners tried to get him out of the cell, because he did not fit in with them.
