According to the local Ministry of Tourism, more than 900 climbers are likely to summit Everest by the end of the year.

Nepal charges 11,000 dollars (235,000 crowns) for one permit, while the entire expedition can cost a climber up to ten times this amount. These are expenses for domestic flights, equipment, tents, food, oxygen cylinders or a team of local porters and guides.

Most of this year’s aspirants to scale the world’s highest peak will attempt the ascent with the help of a Nepalese guide, with 93 women among the climbers who have obtained permits, according to AFP. The most applicants come from China (96) and the United States (87).

Climbing Mount Everest has become very popular in recent years.

In 2019, footage emerged of a “traffic jam” during which dozens of climbers were stranded on the highest reaches of the mountain, causing at least eleven deaths. At the same time, in the mentioned year, Nepal issued “only” 381 permits.

Mount Everest is located on the border between Nepal and China, the ascent can be undertaken from both countries.

However, since 2019, the Chinese authorities do not issue permits to foreign climbers and, among other things, require that the ascent applicant has previously climbed at least one mountain higher than 8,000 meters. The measures prompted a number of Chinese to try to exit from the Nepalese side.

At 8,848 meters, Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth. This year marks 70 years since the first ascent of the Himalayan giant. It was carried out on May 29 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
