The newspaper Bild wrote that the perpetrator apparently knew the victim. The woman allegedly lived nearby and staggered out onto the street, already badly injured, before collapsing. Witnesses immediately alerted the police, who closed one of the intersections for the day for the investigation to secure traces of the crime.
A police spokesman first announced that the victim’s condition was serious and that paramedics had to resuscitate her before taking her to a clinic. “At 4:12 p.m., the fifty-three-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries in the hospital,” the spokesperson said later.
Duisburg has become the scene of a serious crime for the third time this month. Ten days ago, a 26-year-old Syrian broke into a gym and seriously injured four men with a knife. The same perpetrator fatally stabbed a 35-year-old partygoer on Easter.
The investigation into both earlier incidents was taken over on Friday by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, which usually deals with cases involving suspected acts of terrorism. According to the media, there are increasing indications that the attacker is an Islamist. According to the Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reu, the specific motives of the attacker’s actions are still unclear.
