The attack took place last Friday in Cleveland, Texas, when a family of Honduran origin asked their neighbor to stop shooting outside at night. He then broke into their house, where he killed five people. The youngest victim was nine years old. Two women were shot in a bedroom where they were protecting their children with their bodies.
The suspect in the crime is a 38-year-old Mexican, Francisco Oropesa, who was taken into custody by the authorities on Tuesday around seven in the evening local time (Wednesday 2:00 CET). His arrest was preceded by an extensive search involving 250 police officers and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). A reward of 80,000 dollars (1.7 million crowns) was offered for information leading to an arrest.
The police found the suspect near the city of Cut and Shoot in a house belonging to his relatives, several tens of kilometers away from the original crime scene. The suspect was found hiding in a closet under a pile of laundry, the sheriff said. According to the AP agency, Oropes’ hiding place was found based on an anonymous tip.
