In one of the programs on YouTube, the writer said the following words: “We are partners with the Ukrainians only until the first turn, until Putin’s overthrow, until the war with Ukraine stops, until Ukraine wins this war.” We are united here. But go on… It’s our country and our boys after all. Yes, they are cheated and unhappy. Yes, they are sometimes even murderers. But they are ours. It is our country and our zone of responsibility. We would like Putin not to be, but Russia was.”
However, according to Shenderovych, many Ukrainians wish that Russia “all of them, without exception, with everyone, with us, with you, with Pushkin, with Tolstoy, will simply knock the door.” He subsequently accused the Ukrainians of “exudations of Nazism”. How did he justify it? “I hear talk that the Russian people are said to be slavish, that all those who have a Russian passport are goblins. So some Ukrainian who applauds me from Florida is a progressive European, and the symbolic Kara-Murza is a Putin goblin.”
From the reactions, I will mention one Ukrainian and one from a former Russian. Ukrainian columnist Yuriy Romanenko wrote that Ukraine’s existential task is to existentially defeat Russia: “Attempts to find a form of coexistence with Russia have always ended in the same way, namely torture, violence and the destruction of the flowering of the (Ukrainian) nation.”
Romanenko noted that there is no Tolstoy in today’s Russia, and a new Tolstoy will hardly ever be born from the prevailing moral misery. “Russia with its militarism must be broken,” concludes the Ukrainian publicist.
Former Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko has a Russian passport, but he has severed all ties with his former country and is trying to get material help from abroad for the Ukrainian army. He described Šenderovič’s words and the general attitude of the Russian opposition as follows: Ukrainians will destroy Putin for them. The Americans will provide them with facilities and seat them on the throne or next to the throne at the feet of leader Navalny. The Europeans will provide them with multibillion-dollar loans and humanitarian aid. The Germans will rebuild their gas and oil industry and resume oil and gas imports.
“They’re going to come back on a white horse and start building their fucking undersized empire again. Without corruption, with a strong army and nuclear weapons,” concludes Babchenko. He is right about one thing: apart from rare exceptions, such as himself, Russian oppositionists are mentally those brats whose legs are bound by their native lump. In other words, Russia will always come first for them, no matter what. A less cannibalistic regime than under Putin would be enough for them, but it wouldn’t have to be like in the West. Above all, let the country be big and strong.
