We have heard many times that looking at smartphones, tablets or even TV for a long time is not only twice as beneficial for our eyesight. Just like the fact that unnatural movement, i.e. tilting the head forward while watching a mobile phone or writing messages leads to the development of the so-called texting neck syndrome.
But experts have now come up with another warning, which concerns the phone calls themselves. If we want to maintain low blood pressure and a healthy heart (whose condition is affected by high pressure) for as long as possible, we should limit phone calls to a minimum. According to their findings, just half an hour of calling per week is associated with the risk of high blood pressure.
A team of experts from Southern Medical University in China investigated whether there is a direct link between using the phone and hypertension, i.e. high blood pressure.

They analyzed data from more than 200,000 adult volunteers in the UK who filled out a questionnaire about their ‘phone habits’, including how long they had their mobile phone and how many hours a week they used it for calls.
In a 12-year study, experts found that people who used the phone for a total of 30 minutes a week (4 minutes and 17 seconds a day) or more were 12 percent more likely to develop high blood pressure than those who used the phone much less .
But the connection was not so much due to the content of the phone calls, but rather to the low level of radio frequency energy emitted by the devices, according to the researchers.
“The findings definitely raise questions about the safety of mobile phone use, especially in people who use it excessively,” the Daily Mail website quotes from a report published by the academic journal European Heart Journal – Digital Health.

On closer examination, the experts found that people who spent six hours a week on the phone had a 25 percent higher risk of high blood pressure compared to people who did so in total for no more than half an hour a week.
They also found that the length of time the owner owned the phone or whether they used hands-free calling had little bearing on the level of risk.
“Even for the health of the heart, the number of minutes spent on the phone must be monitored. The more there are, the greater the risk. Of course, more studies are needed to confirm it irrefutably, but it already seems that limiting the use of phones is a reasonable solution,” said Professor Xianhui Qin, one of the study’s authors, about the results.
As for the radiation itself, not only mobile phones, it is a frequent source of contradictions between experts. While one group is clearly convinced that it is definitely harmful to our health in many ways, other studies, on the contrary, suggest that there is no significant risk when used sensibly. The situation is probably best described by the statement that “a mobile phone can be a good servant, but a bad master”.
