A black Fender Stratocaster was expected to sell for a tenth of that amount. The guitarist of the cult American rock group committed suicide in April 1994, he was 27 years old.
The Nirvana frontman and grunge pioneer smashed several Fender guitars during his musical career.
“He was an angry man and it showed on stage. And it was evident in the way he handled his tools,” Kody Frederick of Julien’s Auctions told AFP.

The now auctioned guitar was destroyed while Nirvana were working on their breakthrough album Nevermore. It has been repaired, but it is no longer playable.
The instrument was signed by all three band members in silver marker. It also features Cobain’s heartfelt dedication to his friend and industry colleague Mark Lanegan, who died last year. Cobain, who often misspelled his name in his signatures, signed himself as Kurdt Kobain.
He gave the guitar to Lanegan during the North American leg of the Nevermind tour in 1992.

The Fender Stratocaster went on sale with an estimated price of $60,000 to $80,000. The final bid of $596,900 was described by the auction house as stunning. The identity of the buyer is unknown.
Two years ago, an acoustic guitar on which Cobain recorded a famous acoustic concert in 1993, a few months before his death, was sold for six million dollars.
The album MTV Unplugged in New York was released after his death, reaching the top of the Billboard charts and winning a Grammy Award.
