“If I were 20 years older than my wife, no one would think for a second that we couldn’t legitimately be together. But since she is more than 20 years older, according to many people, our relationship is not sustainable, possible,” he told The Parisien at the time.

While there are always exceptions that prove the rule, research has shown that certain age gaps have a greater risk of breaking up than others.

According to a study conducted at Emory University in Atlanta, USA, the larger the age difference, the greater the risk of relationship failure.

Experts in the research found that couples with a five-year age difference have an 18 percent higher risk of relationship breakdown than couples of the same age. What is interesting is that the level of risk for a ten-year age difference has already increased to 39 percent and to a rather surprising 95 percent for people whose age difference is 20 years or more.

Contrary to popular opinion, the researchers believe that the “ideal” age difference is, according to them, a year at most, when the risk of a relationship breaking up is only three percent, added Hugo Mialon, one of the members of the research team.
