“We also wanted to focus on how difficult the business is,” says Eva Slunečková, one of the curators of the Made By Fire exhibition. Current trends in Czech porcelain and glassmaking can be seen on it, but it also thematizes the fragility of the entire industry.
The once famous domestic glassworks and porcelain factories are slowly disappearing. The last blow was dealt by the covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic recession.
The exhibition thus shows plates decorated with the statement of the last owner of a bankrupt porcelain factory, but through porcelain it also addresses the climate crisis or social taboos and sexuality.
Made By Fire offers bulbs with motifs of wilted flowers, porcelain fabric softener bottles and de-tabooed symbols of female masturbation.

The impressive traveling exhibition Designblok Cosmos can also be seen in the garden of the Prague Castle Ballroom. Leading Czech artists exhibit in the futuristic looking mirrored interior – from Maxim Velčovský and Rony Plesl to Lucia Koldová. Here, too, glass plays a major role.
Ten works represent 10 approaches to the way of shaping the present. Although it is a relatively small exhibition, it is conceived as the main presentation of the 25th edition of the show. Curators Jana Zielinsky and Jiří Macek present it as a celebration of the “intergalactic beauty of Czech design” and the path that home design has traveled over the last quarter of a century.
The interior, full of mirrors and LED lights, makes visitors feel as if they are really traveling through space.
