It will replace the winter ice surface that has been used until now, but is technologically inadequate and operationally expensive, and was operated by the technical services in Staroměstská street. City spokesman Jiří Ondrášek told ČTK today.
“The ice surface of technical services is from the 1970s. It is already unsatisfactory in many ways. It does not meet the needs and is expensive to operate. Uneconomical,” said Ondrášek. He added that this is why the technical services decided not to put it into operation this year. Instead, the city will rent a mobile ice rink and have it installed in the square. The area measuring ten by 20 meters will be fenced off with a guardrail and located in the part of the square near the city information center.
“If the idea catches on and there is interest in skating on the square, we will definitely want to continue it in the coming years,” said the mayor of the city, Martin Henč (ANO). City officials hope that skating on the Christmas-decorated square will enhance the festive atmosphere and attract even more people to the city center during Advent and after the holidays. “The preparation of the rink will begin immediately after the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, and skating will be possible within two weeks after that. He will then stay on the spot for about a month,” said Ondrášek.
