It is necessary to consider why so many of us have the behavior of pissed-off moneylenders in our DNA. Why is it that with every above-standard positive manifestation of Czech society, the lowest ones also appear simultaneously?
That nice feeling caused by how much Czechs can be in solidarity never lasts too long. It is regularly replaced by frustration because of those who want to enrich themselves at the expense of people in need.
Not so long ago, I wrote here about the fact that the approach of the Czech public can be described as extraordinary, because thanks to it, in an extremely short time, it was possible to raise almost 150 million to save one child’s life.
But I freely admit that every time I write about goodness, my fingers get a little stuck on the keyboard. We don’t have to lie to ourselves that solidarity in our country does not have its opposite side.
Just a few days ago, my colleague Kristina Ciroková described in detail the suspicious practices of the Ostrava association Allow treatment, which publishes stories of oncologically ill children on its website. However, these are copied from the website of the Donio charity, including names and diagnoses. With two “minor” differences – the described fates have photos of completely different people, often taken from photo banks. In addition, there is a complete lack of information about where the collected money ends up. That is also why the police are interested in the association.
It is certainly not the first time that similar dubious methods have appeared not only on the Czech Internet, but also outside it. In the streets, in mailboxes, in phone conversations. In short, everywhere where “charity scoundrels” were active. And they still do.
The donation platform Znesnáze21 recently pointed out that, according to their estimates, with each regular collection another two to three run outside the public “charities” system. Although not all of them are necessarily fraudulent, they provide a breeding ground for those that were not founded with honest intentions from the beginning.
It is all the more difficult to maintain faith in the good among people, because with fake collections there is a direct correlation between human suffering on the one hand and the abomination of fraudsters’ practices on the other. Scammers do not shy away from taking oncology patients, the deaf, children, the elderly, crippled animals or people affected by floods or tornadoes as hostages.
Without wanting to judge an entire society because of the excesses of individuals, I feel it is necessary to reflect on why so many of us still have this behavior of pissed-off moneylenders ingrained in our DNA. Why is it that with every above-standard positive manifestation of Czech society, the lowest ones also appear simultaneously?
As you can see, there are both heroes and villains among us. This is probably the famous Czech balancing act.
