The US House of Representatives has elected a new speaker. Conservative Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson won the vote.
After 22 days in which the lower house of Congress was practically incapable of action, the Republican majority for the fourth time managed to elect a candidate acceptable to all factions of the ideologically fragmented party.
Democrats, as in previous votes, stood up for their House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Johnson won the Speaker’s seat by a majority of 220 votes to 209.
