The United States banned the import of rough diamonds from the Kremlin-controlled company Alrosa last year, and European Union countries have not stopped importing them. The EU is now looking for a system to stop the trade that finances the war in Ukraine.
Russia is the largest producer of rough diamonds. Through processors in India, they often reach Antwerp, Belgium, where they are sold. Last year alone, according to Eurostat, Russian diamonds worth 1.4 billion euros (about 34 billion crowns) went to the EU.
