The stalls will open on the squares in the historic center on Friday 17th, somewhere on 24th November, when the lighting of the Christmas tree on Freedom Square will also take place. Markets will also be held at Zelné trhu, Dominikánské náměstí and Moravské náměstí. Organizers from TIC Brno and Brno-střed Town Hall said this at a press conference today. The last time there was an ice rink in the historic center before covid was four years ago. In recent years, Brno Christmas has become the biggest festival that takes place in the city throughout the year.
“We have already started building the ice rink. If it is cold enough, it will be open from November 24th and we will open it with a performance by young figure skaters and a light show. It will also be equipped with changing boxes and rental skates,” said the mayor of Brno-střed Vojtěch Mencl (ODS). On Moravské náměstí, both in the park and at the church of St. Thomas, there will be stands of non-profit organizations again this year.
The stalls at the Green Market will open already on November 17, although the first Sunday of Advent is not until December 3 this year. “We had more than a hundred new stands made to make them more comfortable for sellers. They will be re-arranged in the square so that we can place a stage better and in the center of the area at the top, with much more space in front of it. There will be concerts every day and three bands will perform every day,” said deputy mayor Ludmila Oulehlová (ANO).
Another novelty is Gourmet Christmas. In the courtyard of the Old Town Hall, there will be a stand of nine gastronomic businesses, be it restaurants, bistros, pastry shops, cafes or wine bars. Next to them, there will be a Christmas village for children, where there will be child-sized stalls and there will be prepared activities for children.
Other attractions that will be part of the Brno Christmas this year are, for example, the Architectural nativity scene in the House of Lords of Kunštát, the Christmas on the Dragon light installation at the Old Town Hall, and Christmas in the backyard at Radnická 2.
At the observatory on Kraví hora, the Festival of Light will also take place on December 21, i.e. the day of the winter solstice. Thanks to the observatory and Visualove studio, visitors will see a large light and audio installation.
According to Jana Janulíková, director of TIC Brno, Christmas in Brno is becoming more and more popular in Central Europe and more and more foreign tourists are coming to Brno. “We strive to have even more of them here. According to our estimates, roughly 1.5 million people will come to the markets in Brno within four weeks,” said Janulíková.
