The first two were planted today by the mayor and his deputies with the assistance of children from the Pekařská kindergarten at the entrance to the new footbridge over the Opava river in Městské sady. Martin Kůs from the press department of the city told ČTK.
The planting of trees is part of a long-term project to commemorate 800 years since the first written mention of the city. Opava will celebrate eight centuries of existence next year, but trees have already started to be planted this year. “The trees will become part of the entire cycle of events, concerts and other activities carrying that magical figure of eight,” he said.
The first eight-pointed tree was symbolically planted by city officials with the help of preschoolers. Others will be bet by residents of the city, entrepreneurs or collectives of employees of companies, various associations or even pensioners. “It will be possible to register a planted tree on a special portal, where the planter places it in a specific place on the map, writes down its characteristics and also uploads photo documentation as proof of its existence. Subsequently, he will receive a certificate from the city of Opava for its planting and registration,” project coordinator Karin Kuo said about planting trees.
According to her, planters can dedicate their tree to someone. For example, some of the personalities of the Opava past or present, a relative, a descendant, an event or anything connected with Opava. The tree must be planted on private land in the territory of Opava or its urban districts. Trees cannot be planted, for example, in parks, City Gardens or other public spaces. It can be a deciduous or coniferous tree. On the other hand, it will not be possible to register thujas, bushes or hedges.
