Ukraine plans to evacuate truck drivers who got stuck in front of one of the crossings on the Polish-Ukrainian border. Four major border crossings are being blocked by Polish truckers demanding a restriction of competition from Ukraine. Drivers stand in queues for several days and there is a lack of facilities for them around the roads. Two Ukrainian drivers died.
Ukrainian Deputy Infrastructure Minister Serhiy Derkach wrote on Facebook that Ukraine has started collecting information from drivers who would like to be evacuated. “The time for negotiating compromises is over. Our drivers are suffering in sub-freezing temperatures due to the actions of a few people who blocked the borders with the consent of the (Polish) authorities,” wrote Derkač.
He added that the Ukrainian side has turned to the Poles several times for supplying truck drivers with food, for hygienic conditions or for the possibility of the arrival of rescuers, because all this is missing. The Ukrainian authorities therefore want to take away drivers from the border who show interest, the Ministry of Infrastructure has prepared an electronic evacuation request for them.
According to Derkač, Ukraine also proposes that the European Union create a group that would monitor the situation at border crossings.

Polish carriers do not like that their Ukrainian competitors are still using the exemption that allows them to enter EU territory without a permit since the Russian invasion. According to them, it harms competitiveness. Kyiv signaled on Thursday that blockades on Poland’s borders must end before any talks on changes to truck entry permits into the Union can begin.
