The national team advanced to Euro 2024. And after the departure of Jaroslav Šilhavy from the team, the Football Association of the Czech Republic started the reality show Czech Republic is looking for a coach. The water carriers are paying closer attention to Martin Svědík, one of the favorites for the vacant position.
Already this Saturday, December 2, in Hamburg, Germany, from 18:00, the group stage of the European Football Championship, which takes place in the summer of next year, will be drawn. However, the Czech national team will not be represented on the spot by its head coach. His appointment is still pending.
In the latest episode of the Water Bearers podcast, its protagonists discuss why the search for Jaroslav Šilhavý’s successor will likely drag on until January. Out of a number of candidates, they focus primarily on the most prominent one: Martin Svědík from 1. FC Slovácko.
A week ago on Monday, the Czechs advanced to the Euro thanks to their win over Moldova, and coach Šilhavý announced that he was leaving the team. The Football Association of the Czech Republic practically did not move forward in this matter.
“I have to admit that I do not understand at all the procedure of the association, which decided to create a special five-member working group on the matter. The unpreparedness that we can observe in the live broadcast never ceases to surprise me,” says podcast host Jaromír Bosák.
“The head of Czech football, Petr Fousek, practically does not cooperate with the FAČR Sports Council, which should have a crucial voice in such cases. It is staffed by people who undoubtedly understand football. For example, Vladimír Šmicer, Zdeněk Grygera, Tomáš Rosický or Jan Říčka. They are definitely expertly trained to select the right candidate. At the same time, Fousek has traditionally sidelined them and he and his working group made up of officials will make the decisions,” laments longtime football journalist Luděk Mádl.
The water bearers debate why Fousek is bypassing the Sports Council, what complications the delays surrounding the selection of a national team coach can cause, and what role finances play in this.
Witness coach or assistant?
In the narrow circle of favorites is Martin Svědík, who has earned respect for more than five years of systematic work in Slovácko. Water bearers could imagine him on the bench of the Czech national football team and in the role of assistant, who would have extensive powers. “From our recent interview with Martin Svědík, I got the impression that he wouldn’t resist even such a role,” reflects Jaromír Bosák.
“I really like the model in which Svědík would rub shoulders with a more experienced coach like Vítězslav Lavička in the national team. At the same time, I would not underestimate his personal coaching ambitions either. Given that Svědík is the unwritten Czech number two behind Jindřich Trpišovský, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was drawn abroad as well,” says Karel Tvaroh, a former professional footballer.
In the podcast, you will also learn more about the contractual terms of Martin Svědík in Uherské Hradiště, including the exit clause. From January, it will be cheaper to get Svědík’s services.
Sick and red cards
The latest installment of Nosič vody not only praises the contribution of Martin Svědík to Czech football, but the whole of Slovácko, which this time on Sunday practically ran over the ambitious Baník and rose to third place in the Fortuna league at the expense of Pilsen.
The show in the new arena in Hradec Králové did not go well for the West Bohemians, where they only drew and once again confirmed that in the current season they are more suited to the European Cup. Water carriers also discuss the fact that Viktoria striker Tomáš Chorý should have been expelled. They also focus on the controversial interventions of Petr Kodeš from Hradec Králové and Tomáš Wiesner from Sparta.
In the foreign part, the Water Bearers dreamed for a moment about the idea of what a team with an attacking vehicle of Haaland and Kane with the support of Bellingham would look like.
The betting window with Fortuna looks forward to attractive fights for promotion in the Champions League. Can PSG handle the role of favorites with a decimated Newcastle? And how will Sparta fare in the Europa League in the fight for the spring cup continuation with technical Betis Sevilla? Play the latest Water Bearers and you’ll hear a whole lot more.
