The release of Israeli prisoners is based on a temporary ceasefire agreement brokered between Hamas and Israel by Qatar, Egypt and the United States.
Israeli media published the names and photos of the released Israelis, with six of them coming from Kibbutz Be’eri, according to The Times of Israel (ToI). Residents of the kibbutz, which is located on the Israeli border near the Gaza Strip and was one of the targets of the Hamas raid on Israeli territory on October 7, are now staying in a hotel by the Dead Sea. According to ToI, applause and cheers accompanied the reading of the names of those released from the television screen, especially when the name of Raaji Rotem, whose 13-year-old daughter Hila was released from the Gaza Strip last weekend, was read.
Since Friday last week, when the first cease-fire in Israel’s fighting with Hamas since October 7th came into effect, Hamas has released over 80 hostages, including foreigners. Today, two women with Israeli-Russian citizenship were released from the Gaza Strip. At the same time, Israel released 180 Palestinians from its prisons.
The agreement on the four-day truce, which was supposed to end this week on Tuesday morning, has so far been extended by two days, i.e. until Thursday morning. Negotiators, with the participation of Qatar and Egypt, are trying to further extend the ceasefire. The media is speculating that it could be another four days.
