The family of shot Israeli Juval Doron Castleman called his tragic death an “execution”. He was shot dead by an Israeli soldier who apparently mistook him for a terrorist during an attack on the outskirts of Jerusalem. At the same time, Castleman helped neutralize the gunman from the Hamas movement. After the intervention, the man was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly before midnight.
An unfortunate accident
Castleman noticed the terrorist attack while on his way to work. He did not hesitate to stop and face the attackers with a weapon in hand. The family understood his decision. According to them, he was always a “hero”. At the same time as him, two Israeli soldiers who were returning to their unit in the Gaza Strip noticed the attack and, like him, decided to prevent it.
In the video from the security cameras, the soldiers can be seen targeting Castleman as well, thinking that he is another terrorist. He shoots him several times. After the first hit, the man falls to his knees, throws away his weapon and calls to the soldiers not to shoot him. The footage then shows one of the soldiers approaching the kneeling and defenseless Castleman and firing at him again. The Channel 13 website also described the tragic scene.
The family on Friday asked the authorities and security forces to thoroughly investigate the incident. The investigation was first launched by the Israeli police and the Shin Bet, Israel’s General Security Service.
At first, the army saw no reason to participate in the investigation. However, once it became clear that this was likely a soldier’s misconduct, she changed her approach and announced that her team would join other investigators. At the same time, it issued a statement in which it expressed “regret for the death of an innocent civilian.”
More about Thursday’s terrorist attack
This is not an exceptional case. Israel’s armed forces have been criticized several times in the past for shooting and killing terror suspects even after they are already disarmed and pose no threat.
