According to Ukrainian energy experts, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe was dependent on power from backup generators on Saturday night.
“Last night, a total failure occurred at the Zaporizhia Power Plant,” Enerhoatom announced on the Telegram network. He added that power was restored after several hours.
Ukrainian experts continue to work at the power plant, and from September 2022 inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will also monitor the situation on site. She has not yet commented on the matter.
The power plant has been in danger many times since the beginning of the invasion. According to Enerhoatom, the overnight blackout was already the eighth blackout that could have led to a disaster.
The main danger of the interruption of external electricity supplies is that the power plant’s fourth reactor could overheat due to the disconnection of the cooling pumps from electricity. The Russian occupation forces keep it in a so-called hot shutdown regime.
“The unit urgently needs to be put into cold shutdown mode,” Enerhoatom warned on Saturday, adding that the occupying forces are not taking enough care of the power plant’s safety.
