It broke off near the slopes of the ski resort in Obertauern, a place that is particularly popular among ski alpinists.
Mountain service workers unsuccessfully tried to find a signal from an avalanche finder and searched the avalanche site with probes. According to Marie Riedler, a spokeswoman for the Salzburg Mountain Service, the operation, which involved helicopters and search dogs, was eventually called off, saying that the missing persons report had not been confirmed.
