“In just 66 days, the number of functioning hospitals in Gaza has dropped from thirty-six to eleven. One remained in the north, the other ten are in the south,” Richard Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative for the Palestinian territories, told Reuters.
As he added, he hopes and prays that no more hospitals will be lost, The Guardian writes. “We cannot afford to lose more medical facilities,” Peeperkorn appealed. He also emphasized the need for additional hospital beds and the need to restore the functionality of the healthcare system, reports the BBC.
The WHO has previously issued a statement critical of Israel, which it says is detaining and mistreating medical personnel during the complex situation in the Gaza Strip.
