Czech military aid to Ukraine is money well spent – and that in the Czech Republic we can shamelessly blow up crowns and euros.
Europe is said to be haunted by the specter of war fatigue, fatigue from helping Ukraine. Maybe it’s just a dream of Russian propagandists, maybe it’s true. So let’s think about one of the data provided by the Ministry of Defense about Czech aid. The equipment that was destined for Ukraine was bought for more than six billion crowns in the past, but the so-called residual value is now 1.2 billion, according to the authority.
1.2 billion? How to approximate such an amount? Journalists are sometimes laughable (even to themselves) with illustrative examples to get the reader into the picture. Typically, someone in the article will sooner or later convert any surface measure to football fields or Prague’s Wenceslas Square.
One billion two hundred million crowns. Is it a lot or a little? Here, with a little recollection, the example will be found by itself, we don’t even have to do much math. It’s one to one. The legendary Prague Opencard came for exactly the same amount. That many of you don’t know what it’s all about shows how well this money was spent.
Opencard was supposed to be the card of the future, smarter than the average Prague resident, next to the Blanka tunnel, one of the monuments to Mayor Pavel Bém. It was built and invested, but while people in most larger cities could already pay by card in trams and buses and upload coupons for transport to the significantly cheaper Opencard sisters, time stood still in Prague. Rescue came many years later in the form of Lítáčka. It is true that the toes of many Praguers curl up at the mention of her name… but it works.
From this point of view, 1.2 billion to help a country under attack and to put a stick under the feet of Russia’s expansionist appetites seems like an incredibly good investment. And we haven’t even mentioned the old familiar guide of recent years – inflation. When we add it up, we – especially those who don’t live near the Polish border – get a feeling we haven’t known for a long time: We bought cheap! That’s just the cure for frustration. Kinda tired.
